The Effects of the Binge Eating Tendency and Evaluative Conditioning on Body Satisfaction and Negative Affect

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the binge eating tendency and evaluative conditioning on body satisfaction and negative affect. Fifty six female students in the university of Gyeongsang province participated in this study. All participants completed the questionnaires, including the Binge Eating Subscale of Bulimia Test Revised Scale, the Body Image States Scale, the Negative Affect Schedule Subscale of Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule Scale. Repeated measure analyses of variance were used to analyze the data. The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, the body satisfaction of positive evaluative conditioning increased than the body satisfaction of control conditioning. Second, the effect of the binge eating tendency on body satisfaction changed by the body's evaluative conditioning. Specifically, the difference of body satisfaction according to evaluative conditioning in high binge eating tendency group showed higher score than that of the body satisfaction in low binge eating tendency group. Third, the negative affect of positive evaluative conditioning increased than the negative affect of control conditioning. Fourth, the effect of the binge eating tendency on negative affect didn't change by the body's evaluative conditioning. These results showed that the evaluative conditioning gives an significant effect on body satisfaction and negative affect. Moreover, the body satisfaction of high binge eating tendency group increased when their body was associated with positive stimuli.
